About Have Robot, Will Travel!
Where did this idea come from?
This site and the idea for it came from the FIRST Tech Challenge team 2848 - the Techno Guards.
This team has done literally hundreds of presentations to schools and classrooms in the three years that they have been competing. As three year Northern California Inspire Award Champions, they have worked hard to connect with as many students as they can - and inspire them to become involved in FIRST and STEM.
Teachers always seem to say "I'd love to have a robotics team come to my class” and other FIRST teams have said that they struggle with making contacts with teachers in their communities. Somehow these two pieces never seemed to match up.
To solve this, the team put together a one minute video promoting FIRST for an event called STEMposium - which was looking for innovative new ways to spread STEM education in California. Their video won them a spot as a finalist, and on April 1, 2011, they presented their idea at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
Their idea to connect FIRST teams with STEM educators was selected as a winner, and "Have Robot, Will Travel!" was born!
